Security operations centers face high levels of staff turnover

New research from managed detection and response company CRITICALSTART finds that security operations center (SOC) analysts are being overwhelmed by alerts and this is leading to high rates of analyst turnover. In the past year, 80 percent of respondents reported SOC turnover of more than 10 percent of analysts, with nearly half reporting between 10 and 25 percent turnover. 35 percent report losing a quarter or more of their SOC analysts in under a year. Apple apologizes for having contractors listen to Siri recordings and announces privacy changes

Following outcry over human "grading" of Siri recordings, Apple has issued an apology and promised that it will no longer retain recordings of interaction with the digital assistant unless given explicit permission. The company says that "we haven't been fully living up to our high ideals, and for that we apologize". Only a quarter of UK firms prioritize security when buying new tech

Only 24 percent of organizations are prioritizing security when it comes to technology investment according to a new report from UK-based software company Advanced. Web host Hostinger resets 14 million customer passwords following data breach

Hosting company Hostinger has reset passwords for all of its customers after a data breach in which a database containing information about 14 million users was accessed "by an unauthorized third party". Hostinger says that the password reset is a "precautionary measure" and explains that the security incident occurred when hackers used an authorization token found on one of the company's servers to access an internal system API. Five vendors account for nearly a quarter of all vulnerabilities

Interest in VMWare Cloud use on AWS grows

Apple has updated its WebKit policy, increasing the company's focus on privacy. The new WebKit Tracking Prevention Policy now states that any circumvention of its anti-tracking feature is treated in the same way, and as seriously, as security issues. Deception technology speeds up detection of attacks

Users of deception technology report a 12X improvement in the average number of days it takes to detect attackers operating within an enterprise network. New research for Attivo Networks carried out by Enterprise Management Associates suggests attacker dwell times can be as low as 5.5 days with deception in use compared to an average of 78 to 100 days for those not using the technology. 2019 is on track to be another 'worst on record' year for data breaches according to a new report from Risk Based Security which finds the number of reported breaches has gone up by 54 percent and the number of exposed records by 52 percent compared to the first six months of 2018. The education sector has become one of the most sought after targets for cybercriminals, according to the latest report from Malwarebytes Labs. In the first half of 2019, the top three largest categories of threats identified among education institutions' devices are adware (43 percent), Trojans (25 percent) and backdoors (three percent). A new study of over 700 full-time US employees reveals that that 48 percent of employees have access to more company data than they need to perform their jobs, while 12 percent of employees say they have access to all company data. Second quarter sees an 18 percent rise in DDoS attacks

In the second quarter of 2019, the total number of DDoS attacks grew by 18 percent, compared to the same period in 2018 according to a new report from Kaspersky. There is, however, a drop compared to the first quarter of this year, with attacks down 44 percent. Cisco to pay $8.6 million for supplying the US government with software known to be insecure

Cisco has agreed to pay $8.6 million to settle a claim that it sold video surveillance software to the American government even though it was aware it contained security vulnerabilities. A total of fifteen US states filed a case under the False Claims Act after Homeland Security, the Secret Service, the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Air Force and the Federal Emergency Management Agency all purchased flawed software from Cisco. Rather than improving security as desired, the complainants said that Cisco's software actually made systems less secure.
