Just prior to its quarterly earnings report to analysts, Apple Inc. released some typically astounding figures, and one atypical surprise: Net quarterly profit growth at the end of fiscal second quarter 2007 is now nearly 88% annually, at $770 million on revenue of $5.26 billion. As it turns out, the Mac was a key contributor.

In comments to reporters this morning, Rep. Barney Frank (D - Mass.) confirmed he intends to introduce legislation before the US House of Representatives tomorrow that would effectively repeal a portion of a shipping ports protection bill that, just incidentally, prohibits US banks from transferring funds to and from regions of the world where gambling is not expressly permitted.

A group of researchers testing out the so-called Internet2 network said it had broken speed records by first sending data at 7.67 gigabits per second, and breaking it the next day with a data transfer rate of 9.08Gbps.

Google this week offered up changes to the open source MySQL database, which are designed to improve the free software's ability to perform under heavy load. The improvements were released under a GPL license and may be freely implemented by the MySQL community, the company said.

Microsoft has release an April 2007 Cumulative Update for Windows Vista's built-in Media Center application, which aims to resolve a number of issues reported by users. On the list of fixes are DVD freezes, errors when deleting a picture, Media Center rotating the wrong picture, among others.

Nokia boasted Wednesday that it had shipped over 100 million phones using its Series 60 platform. The operating system has been deployed across Nokia's high-end phones, and has also been used in smart phones by Samsung and LG.

RIM on Wednesday introduced a new phone for the Verizon Wireless network that would allow the carrier's customers to use the phone overseas. Included in the phone is a dual-mode chip compatible with both CDMA and GSM.
